Meet Ryan, Veridian Software Engineer

One of our newest Veridian recruits, Ryan joined our team of software engineers in 2020.

We found ourselves in the happy position of needing to grow our team after winning several large projects that required all hands on deck.

Ryan recently graduated with a Bachelor of Computer Science from Waikato University. He assists with regular Veridian software upgrades, customizations and support tasks.

What has been the highlight of your first year at Veridian?

I think the best thing about working at Veridian is that I’m able to work and learn at the same time. As much as University is a great place to learn, the Veridian workplace has allowed me to expand a huge amount of my computer science knowledge and everyone in the office is always eager to help and guide me. This has been the first time that I’ve had the opportunity to work with digital collections and I’ve gained a lot from it so far.

Which aspect of your job interests you most?

There are a lot of things I’ve had the opportunity to work on throughout my first year. I've enjoyed getting experience with a bunch of different aspects in this position. Further developing my interface design skills and getting to see a collection layout change completely has been really satisfying.

Where is your happy place?

On a beautiful sunny day I’d have to say looking out at a view or at the beach with a beer in my hand. On a rainy day there’s no nicer place to be than curled up in bed, it's like the world is giving you permission to be lazy.

Describe your co-workers in three words.

Intelligent. Helpful. Patient.

Is there a digital collection you’ve worked on that stands out to you?

I’ve had the chance to work on a few different digital collections now and the ones that have stood out to me the most recently would have to be the Library of Virginia’s Virginia Chronicle and Purdue University’s Exponent Archive collections. I recently had the chance to update the Purdue collection interface design to better represent the Purdue brand which I really enjoyed working on.

Tell us something surprising about yourself.
